DEEP DIVE: Discover the inspiration behind the Wonderland Collection

With the creation of our Wonderland Collection book for retailers, we thought it might be a nice idea to do a bit of a deep dive on the collection and the inspiration behind the designs. Read on to discover how Myf finds her inspiration and how these become the beautiful designs ready to transform your home.

The Coral Reef Extra Wide wallpaper shown in our collection book

Wonderland takes you on a journey like no other. Begin by exploring the mystical depths of great coral reefs and shorelines and slowly wind your way up through towering and tumbling wildflowers to join the cherubs hanging out on Cloud 9, underneath the sparkling constellations of the Victorian night sky. Our debut collection explores the different levels of our world and aims to celebrate its beauty, through bold colours and unique, maximalist designs.

No matter where you look Mother Nature is creating unbelievable colours and phenomenon for us to enjoy, and how better to honour her than by bringing this in to your home?

However, in classic Fraîche style, we wanted to give each design a slight twist towards the fantastical, so keep your eyes peeled as the collection is scattered with hints of Victoriana and whimsical, wonderland twists. Lets take a deep dive with Myf into some of our favourites.

Secret Garden Mural

The flowers featured in the Secret Garden Mural are from my own garden and were in bloom while I was creating the rest of the collection. As a result their colours subconsciously inspired a lot of the colours seen in the designs. In an effort to capture the beauty of the impact the natural world has on us, I decided to centre them in the collection, as the first design that reaches from the ground to the sky.

The flowers in the Secret Garden Mural are the only motifs in the collection that were not hand drawn and painted. I decided to follow the Victorian’s in their methods of documenting botanicals and pressed the flowers before scanning them - this method emphasised the natural tones and preserved the fine details such as veins in the petals.

The surreal scale of the print was inspired after watching Disney’s 1951 adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alices’s Adventures in Wonderland where Alice has shrunk down so she is in a forest of flowers.

The Entomologist Wallpaper - Orange

I've always been a little bit obsessed with insects (not spiders though). With the Entomologist wallpaper I wanted to challenge the acceptance of butterflies in commercial design but the vast ignorance of insects, asides from in the children’s textiles market.

Taking inspiration from Jennifer Angus’ installations, the Entomologist wallpaper was one of the first of the collection. My goal was to execute high quality, well drafted motifs with a sense of realism to reflect traditional entomology studies but with a contemporary twist through the choice of colour, in an attempt to encourage viewers to embrace the beauty of insects. The mandala composition references traditional tile work and distracts the eye, hiding the insects in plain sight, meaning you have to double take to spot them, which I always love to do in my designs.

The Playing Cupid Mural

The main inspiration for the Playing Cupid mural was renaissance frescos such as Raphael’s Triumph of Galatea and Victorian architecture featuring decorative cherubs. It was also a micro trend in SS20/21 fashion and as interiors generally follow fashion this jumped at me as the perfect way to create something impactful and unexpected.
